An Open Invitation To Parents

My name is Vickie Dakin. I have been NDT trained and a specialist working with babies for years. I have been a physical therapist for 30 years and have worked with hundreds of children and their families. Because of this extensive experience, I look at development from a different perspective. I created this blog to share my knowledge about babies and development with parents and other therapists and to encourage others to share what they know.

I am available to answer questions. I will be writing articles on various topics with the emphasis on babies and children from 0-3 years old. I personally invite you to share your thoughts with me as we grow together.

your expertise and incite is greatly appreciated. i just found this blog in attempt to find some information regarding my newborn son (born today 01.18.10) has minimal use of his right hand. his grip is very weak compared to his left. he's not able to lift his right hand at the wrist. shoulder and elbow movement all seems fine. i'm just tryin to get an idea of what the problem is and if it can be corrected. thanks in advance for taking the time.

Dear Anonymous,
If your baby was just born today, don't panic if they seem weaker. The first thing is to check to be sure all the muscles are moving even if it is weakly. Get a toy, such as a light weight rattle and see if you can get him to hold it even briefly. Try a little more each day. Often weakness right after birth will resolve fairly quickly. You can also request a therapy evaluation before you leave the hospital.
Good luck!

My 4 month old's nurse practitioner at the pediatrician office recommended physical therapy for my LO because she always tilts her head to one side. Its not that is fused in that position that just seems comfortable for her. She does have full mobility of her head. Would neck strengthening exercises at home work just as well?
